In 1976 the Bach Festival was founded in Twain Harte by Carl Anton Wirth, a pianist, conductor and composer. At this event, some played instruments while others listened to the music. The Bach Festival became an annual event and, in 2002, the Sonora Bach Festival became incorporated. This volunteer organization is comprised of Executive and Advisory Boards, which meet monthly throughout the year to plan the annual Bach Festival in October.
For thirty years the Sonora Bach Festival has remained true to its original mission, which is to enrich the quality of life for both youth and adults through knowledge and appreciation of classical music; by developing opportunities for community members to perform classical music under professional guidance and conditions; and by organizing and sponsoring a yearly Sonora Bach Festival, to help achieve these objectives. In the past thirty years the Festival has staged over 150 performances, contracted with 300-500 professional artists, and maintained a valuable forum for local talent during the Locals' Concert on the final Festival day. Although the Festival has continued to vary and refine its programs, the Bach Youth Concert has consistently provided a performance venue for fifteen talented youth to an audience capacity of up to four hundred.
